Kratos Could Have Died in an Early Draft for God of War: Ragnarok

The long-awaited sequel to the 2018 hit video game God of War, Ragnarok, was out on November 9, 2022. However, a recent interview with the game's creative director revealed that the protagonist, Kratos, could have died in an early draft of the story. This surprising revelation has fans of the series wondering what the death of Kratos would have meant for the game's plot and characters.  Creative director Cory Barlog revealed in an interview that one of the earlier drafts of the story featured Kratos' death. Barlog explained that the developers had considered "killing off the character" but ultimately felt that the story would not have been as compelling without the presence of Kratos. He further noted that the team wanted the game to have "a sense of completion," which meant that the protagonist needed to remain alive until the game's conclusion.  Barlog also discussed the decision to bring back Kratos' son Atreus for Ragnarok. According to the creative director, Atreus' inclusion was "inevitable" due to the character's importance in the original game. Furthermore, the developers felt that Atreus' journey in this sequel was a way to show how Kratos had grown and changed since his previous adventures.  Barlog also discussed the importance of Kratos' mortality in the upcoming game. He noted that the developers wanted to emphasize that Kratos was still mortal and vulnerable, even in spite of his godly strength. This decision was made in order to add an element of suspense and tension to the game, as players would be left to wonder whether or not Kratos would be able to survive the trials he faced.  The fact that Kratos could have died in an early draft of God of War: Ragnarok has certainly raised many questions about the game's plot and characters. This information may be of interest to players. The very realization of such an ending fuels interest in the game.
