Reviving Classics and Embracing Innovation: PlayStation's Future Horizons
The gaming sector is perpetually progressing, as businesses exploring new avenues while also reminiscing about beloved classics. Recently, there have been hints regarding the return of some cherished PlayStation franchises, stirring excitement among fans.
Could we soon see the revival of iconic titles like Killzone or Gravity Rush? In a recent discussion, the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Hermen Hulst, indicated that such possibilities might be in the realm of reality. Engaging with a Japanese video game magazine, Hulst reflected on the current direction of PlayStation.
Following the notable success of Astro Bot—a delightful platformer packed with references to various PlayStation properties—the interviewer raised questions about the future of less active franchises. Hulst remarked on the significance of their extensive intellectual property collection, considering it a crucial asset for PlayStation. He mentioned that as they work to enhance their portfolio, there is an ongoing examination of opportunities related to their classic IP alongside the creation of new ones. While his response might not have been particularly detailed, it certainly left the door open for future developments.
In addition, Hulst addressed some of the less favorable outcomes of recent PlayStation releases. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the live-service shooter Concord, which was discontinued just two weeks post-launch. Nevertheless, he assured that the company intends to continue producing online games while maintaining their focus on captivating single-player experiences.
Looking ahead, Hulst stated that the plan is to pursue the development of live service games alongside the story-driven endeavors that players have come to appreciate. He showcased Helldivers 2 as an example of a successful co-op shooter that thrived due to ongoing content updates, highlighting the potential that lies within live service offerings.
When asked about his anticipation for upcoming PS5 titles, Hulst expressed his enthusiasm for all current projects. He found it challenging to choose just one game or developer to highlight. However, he did mention the excitement surrounding the announcement of Ghost of Yotei, developed by Sucker Punch Productions, is a studio renowned for its outstanding contributions to the gaming world.
