Unveiling the Timeline: Indiana Jones and the Great Circle's Adventure Awaits
As the gaming community approaches the holidays, excitement builds around Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, slated to be one of the standout releases this Christmas and into next spring with its launch on PS5. After viewing an extensive preview and gaining insights from the directors during our interview at Gamescom, our curiosity about the adventure ahead for Indy continues to grow, especially with the game set to release on December 9th.
We kicked off our conversation by exploring the game’s placement within the original trilogy of films. While it has been confirmed that the Nazi threat resurfaces, which rules out both Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Dial of Doom, integrating this game into the busy timeline of Dr. Henry Jones III presents its challenges. In their dialogue with us at Gamescom 2024, directors Axel Torvenius and Jens Andersson highlighted a particular moment that sheds some light on this issue. The complete interview is available for viewing below.
To focus on the specific information we were seeking, at the 11:23 mark in the interview, we inquired about the game’s timeline. Torvenius and Andersson provided clarity on the series' chronology. "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" serves as a prequel to "Raiders of the Lost Ark." In this film, Indiana Jones' adventures with the cult of Kali-worshipping Thuggees take place in 1935, whereas "Raiders" begins its story in 1936.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle takes place in 1937, creating a timeline of events that includes 1935, 1936, and then jumps to 1938. That year marks the setting of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Thus, while players can expect nods to the Ark of the Covenant in The Great Circle—evident from the iconic giant stone ball scene seen in trailers—there won't be any references to the Holy Grail.
Overall, it appears that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle marks a significant milestone for delivering the ultimate Indiana Jones experience within the realm of video games, fulfilling a long-held desire of fans everywhere.
